Lifshitz Phase Gauge Symmetry Breaking and Application to E 6 and E 8 Grand Unification

چکیده
When a gauge theory with gauge group G is broken by a dynamical condensate C that transforms nontrivially under G, with covariant derivative (DμC) , the leading derivative term (DμC) (DC)A in the effective action can have a coefficient α of general sign and magnitude. The case α > 0 corresponds to the usual Higgs phase, but the cases α = 0 and α < 0 correspond to new phases with novel properties. We term the α = 0 case the “null” or “Lifshitz phase”, because of the analogy with the Lifshitz point of condensed matter physics. In the Lifshitz phase, the Goldstone bosons with quantum numbers corresponding to the broken gauge generators appear as physical states. We discuss scenarios that arise if various grand unification groups were to break through a Lifshitz phase, and show that in the cases of E6 and E8, the Goldstone multiplets would contain a scalar with the correct quantum numbers to be the standard model Higgs boson. We show that starting from supersymmetric E8, forces mediated by even spin bosons generate a plausible gauge breaking hierarchy leading to the standard model.

متن کاملMisleading Coupling Unification and Lifshitz Type Gauge Theory
Grand unification is an attractive idea and enables the unification of forces and the (partial) unification of quarks and leptons in each family.1) The introduction of supersymmetry (SUSY) increases the reality of grand unification. In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the gauge couplings meet at MX = 2.1× 1016GeV if the superpartners and Higgs particles exist below or around O(...

We investigate a 5D SU(6) grand gauge-Higgs unification model compactified on an orbifold S/Z2. Ordinary quarks and leptons, together with right-handed neutrinos, are just accommodated into a minimal set of representations of the gauge group, without introducing any exotic states in the same representations. The proton decay turns out to be forbidden at least at the tree level. We also find a c...
متن کاملElectric dipole moments and b-τ unification in the presence of an intermediate scale in SUSY grand unification
We show that an intermediate gauge symmetry breaking scale can be a significant source of electric dipole moments for the electron and neutron in supersymmetric grand unified theories. New phases, similar to that of the CKM matrix, appear which do not arise from the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking operators. To illustrate, we choose some grand unified SUSY models having an intermediate gauge symm...
